Join our extended bike tour of Amsterdam treats and countryside retreats.
Visit the oldest windmill in the city, plus a stop at a 400 year old working cheese farm. Yes, there are delicious cheese samples!
One of the best things about Amsterdam is it's easy to get out of the city on a bike. Just twenty minutes in the right direction and the city begins to slowly fade away. Try it and you'll find that the city is even more enjoyable after taking a break in the tranquil Dutch countryside.
We begin this ride with a leisurely pedal through the world famous Vondel Park. Then we are off through one of the outer neighborhoods to explore a floating house boat community. The houseboat community is protected from flooding by modern working lock that borders a giant freshwater lake. After passing over the freshwater lock system, we ride through Amsterdam's forest to see the exterior of a 378 year old windmill. We stop there for a short break and learn how the surrounding landscape was reclaimed using windmills. It's a very photogenic stop, and we will happily take photos of you in front of this picturesque windmill, so bring a camera!
After the windmill, we're off to a 400 hundred year old working farm. There we discover the secrets of how Dutch cheese and clogs are made. Clogs (wooden shoes) were traditionally used by farmers to walk on the swampy reclaimed land and the farm we visit is one of the few farms left in the Netherlands that makes clogs on site. Of course, there are also delicious free cheese samples. If you like the cheese, the farmer will gladly sell you some from his little store or you can even have your name carved into a pair of clogs!
After visiting the farm, we ride through the classic Dutch landscape known as "polders" or reclaimed land. Some elevations are as low as four meters below sea level!
We return using a different route. Riding next to the gently flowing Amstel River, we re-enter the city through the lovely Beatrix Park and eventually return to our starting point near Museumplein.
This is always a popular tour and it regularly fills up, so please book ahead. Feel free to bring snacks or lunch that you can eat on the go if you feel you may want more than just some cheese samples. If you would like to stop for lunch, please book a private tour and we will be more than happy to make that happen!
Approximate distance is 20km or 12 miles. The terrain is mostly flat and our bikes have seven gears.

I'm not a great on a bike. Should I come on this tour? We ride through the city of Amsterdam to reach the countryside, so you should be confident riding a bike in traffic. You do not have to be in great shape for our bike tour, as Amsterdam and the surrounding area is flat. However, you should be able to ride a bike for at least 23 kilometers (around 14 miles) without risking an accident. This means that wobbly riders are not welcome! We do reserve the right to refund your payment if you are unable to ride a bike at the level needed to safely complete this tour.
I normally ride racing bikes at home, what is the pace of your tour? If you normally ride at top speeds on carbon fiber bikes at home, then joining a Public Joy Ride Group Tour will not meet your biking expectations. You are welcome to book a Private Tour and ride at a faster pace. Please mention that you would like a fast paced ride when booking.
We don't offer refunds for rainy weather, but we do provide rain gear and helmets for all of our bike tours. Please email or phone in advance if you want helmets and we can make sure that we have your size available. We can also keep your luggage in our secure bike storage area if needed.
Our bike tours are designed to give our guests the highest quality Amsterdam experience. Should you feel that any of our tours were not worth it, please tell us and we will gladly give you a refund.
"It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them." - Ernest Hemingway
